Gospel Reading: Jn 16:12-15
Jesus said to his disciples: “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming. He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.”
REFLECTIONS
He will guide you to all truth
Jesus assures his disciples that the Holy Spirit will lead them to all truth. What they know now about him and about God is incomplete. In fact, they are not yet ready to understand everything. Jesus cannot overload them with knowledge and information about spiritual things during his earthly life. The complete truth will come only through their continued formation and guidance by the Holy Spirit.
With the Spirit, the disciples will not err when teaching what God wants them to communicate to the people. They will draw them closer to God.
“All truth” refers to all that the Holy Spirit hears from Jesus and will communicate to the disciples. And whatever Jesus gives the Spirit comes from the Father. For us Catholics, all truth comes from the Holy Trinity; the three Persons are all mentioned in the Gospel.
