Former WBO world superflyweight champion Marvin Sonsona is determined to regain his old fiery form as he makes his ring comeback this weekend.
Proof of this is the decision of the 27-year-old General Santos City native boxer to conduct his roadwork during midday which is usually the hottest time of the day.
Sonsona’s unique training is paying dividends thus far as his weight has gone down to 145lbs, 40 pounds lighter than 186lbs which was his weight when he entered the Survival Camp in Magallanes, Cavite last month.
“Hirap ako kung training lang kaya ginawa ko tumatakbo ako ng tanghaling tapat na may suot na sweat shirt at jacket para talagang sunog ang fats ko,” said Sonsona. “Desisyon ko nay un kasi gusto ko talaga mabawasan timbang ko dahil ayaw pumayag ng kalaban na lampas sa weight limit na napag-usapan.”
Sonsona (20-1-1, 15 knockouts) will make his ring return this Sunday when he meets Arief Blader of Indonesia in an eight-round non-title fight set at 141lbs.
This will be Sonsona’s first fight since scoring a 10-round majority decision over American Jonathan Arellano last June 2015 in Carson, California.
“Fighter siya at yun ang gusto kong kalaban kasi ayoko ng mga tumatakbo. Ingat din ako kasi matagal akong walang laban ,” said Sonsona.
Sonsona’s comeback fight is one of the featured bouts of a card topbilled by Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga who will face Gabriel Mendoza of Colombia in a 12-round world minimumweight title eliminator this Sunday at the SM Skydome inside the SM North in Quezon City.
