Army waxed hot at the service area as it outhustled gritty Air Force, 25-23, 21-25, 25-23, 25-27, 15-12, yesterday to pick up its first victory in the men’s division of the 2018 Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference at the Batangas City Sports Coliseum.
The Troopers sizzled with 12 service aces including six from Nico Ramirez to finally crawl out of the cellar following back-to-back defeats from Vice Co. and Instituto Estetico Manila.
Skipper Benjaylo Labide steered Army by firing 17 kills to finish with 20 points, while John Ian Depamaylo delivered the needed reinforcement by pumping in 12 points including two blocks.
The duo’s performance overshadowed the efforts of Fauzi Ismail and Ranran Abdilla, who exploded for 24 points each in a losing effort for Air Force.
Ismail and Abdilla were unstoppable at the attack line with combined 43 hits, but Army retaliated with a rock-solid defense by making 10 blocks.
