READERS’ REQUEST – Upon readers’ request, Highspeed updates showbiz lingo, a regular section – more or less – in this column.
“Luz Valdez” (loser) and “Winnie Santos” (winner) are already “classics” in showbiz lexicon.
Oh, before going any further, it must be said again and again that showbiz lingo is all rhyme and no reason. It has nothing to do with the names of persons used. Having said that, let’s proceed.
The newer words are “Lotlot de Leon” and “Winwyn Marquez,” for loser and winner, respectively.
Mind both women are winners in real life. Lotlot as actress and Winwyn as beauty queen.
Yes, it’s time to give “Lucila Lalu” and “Lucita Soriano” a rest.
Emerging are “Winnie Cordero” or “Winnie Monzon,” for winner, and “Lucy Torres,” for loser, of course.
KARMA AND OTHERS – Big Karma is “Carmi Martin” while small karma is “Carmina Villarroel.”
Tired is “Cherry Pie Lupaypay.”
Haggard is “Haggardo Versoza.”
Aware is “Charo Santos-Conscious.”
“Aleli Abadilla” and “Bonita Lee” are alalay.
“Ma at Pa,” on the other hand, is short for malay ko, paki ko.
“Lady Gaga” is – Isn’t the meaning obvious?
“Purita Mirasol” is poor and miserable.
“Rica Peralejo” is rich, moneyed. (The real RP finished college at Ateneo, is married to a pastor, already a mother. And a fine writer, to boot.)
“Lady Lavender” is washerwoman, whose services many of us rely on.
“Maid of Cotton” or “Maid of Honor” stand for household help.
“Nanette Inventor” – Fond of making up stories.
“Crayola Pagaspas” – Think of the song “Cry Me a River.”
(Okay, that’s enough showbiz lingo lessons for today. But again to remind: showbiz lingo is more rhyme than reason.)
