Reinhard Jumamoy completed a fastbreak play with just five ticks left and National University outlasted La Salle Greenhills, 66-65, to win the 15-year-old division title in the recent 5th HDBL Freego Kids Cup at the SGS Stadium in Quezon City.
Jumamoy’s heroics completed the team’s impressive come-from-behind win that enabled La Salle to join the list of champions in the event organized by Edster Sy.
La Salle actually had a chance to snatch the win but Lih Ambrose dela Cruz missed a potential game-winning three-point shot.
La Salle’s Jan Clement Macalalag, who finished with 13 points, emerged as the tournament MVP while Echo Laurel, who topscored for NU with 18 points, emerged as the Finals MVP.
Aside from Laure and Macalag, other members of the Mythical Selection were NU’s Kenjie Duremdes, La Salle’s Kenshin Padrones and Letran’s John Rey Guevara.
La Salle did not go home empty-handed as its 12-under team triumphed over Pulong Selection, 95-77, in the event presented by Freego and backed by AXA Philippines with Boy de Vera and Willy Chan serving as commissioner and tournament director, respectively.
Lorenzo Hizon struck hardest for La Salle with 32 points and 11 boards.
Aside from Hizon, also shining for La Salle were Andre Minas and Gian Gomez who emerged as season and Finals MVP, respectively.
Comprising the Mythical Selection are Hizon, Minas, Pulong Selection’s Joaquin Sison and Geoff Lopez and Charles Verbo of Warriors.
