Woman International Master (WIM) Marie Antoinette San Diego gained a share of the lead with four others even as International Master (IM) Paulo Bersamina recovered from a fourth-round loss with an impressive Round 5 win in the 2018 Asian Universities Chess Championships at the Tagaytay City Convention Center.
The 19-year-old San Diego split the point with Chinese Woman Grandmaster Wang Jue to slightly improve to 4 points on three wins and two draws.
The draw enabled San Diego to tie Jue, Indian Woman Fide Master Sahajasri Cholleti, WIM Qui Mengjie and Nie Xin of China.
WIM Bernadette Galas, meanwhile, trailed behind leaders with 3.5 points after halving the point with Jerlyn Mae San Diego.
In men’s play, Bersamina regained his composure from a Round 4 defeat to IM Xu Yi of China on Monday afternoon as he dismantled IM Muhammad Lufti Ali of Indonesia.
