Eugene Torre, Asia’s first grandmaster, will take part in a four-man tournament that includes former world champion GM Anatoly Karpov of Russia late this month in Spain.
Torre, 66, will leave on June 23 for Platja D’ Aro, a seaside resort town in Catalonia, to face Karpov, GM Lujbomir Ljubojevic of Yugoslavia and reigning world seniors champion Anatoly Vaisser in the event billed as “The Battle of Legends” set June 26-July 1.
The legend serves as the highlight of the week-long International Chess Festival “Vila de Platja D’ Aro.”
Tournament format is double-round robin with all participants taking part in rapid and blitz events.
A win in rapid play is worth 2 points while 1 point will be awarded for a victory in blitz.
The player with the most number of points will be declared champion.
“I’m excited to play with Tolya (Karpov’s nickname) again,” said Torre who won the bronze medal on board three in the last Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan in 2016.
Torre trails Karpov, 4-2, with five draws in their head-to-head duels in classical chess.
