Karen Manayon came six seconds short of qualifying for the 2019 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina as visitors dominated the qualifying races held yesterday in Subic.
Manayon was outsprinted by Hong Kong’s Hie Yee Chan to grab the fifth and last spot in the girls’ division.
Singapore’s Emma Ada Middleditch won the event that was reduced to a duathlon after organizers canceled the swim stage because of floating debris that were washed ashore by inclement weather.
Rounding out the top 5 were Korean Jung Won Lee, Chinese Xinying Yu and Meiji Lu and Japanese Maki Uchida.
Hie took the last bus despite finishing sixth since a country can only field one entry.
In the boys’ side, Japanese Teppei Tokuyama and Kanta Ando finished 1-2 followed by China’s Junjie Fan, Hong Kong’s Hung Tiklong and Japanese Yuya Otani.
Home bet Juan Francisco Baniqued dropped his left shoe at the bike mount area and finished 13th.
Meanwhile, John Chicano and Kim Kilgroe stamped their class in the South East Asian Triathlon (SEATA) Sprint Championships.
Chicano led a 1-2 sweep with Andrew Remolino taking second place. Indonesian Jaujari Johari settled for third.
Kilgroe, on the other hand, bested Singaporean Phoebe Kee and compatriot Ma. Claire Adorna.
