Asian Games-bound Amaya Paz-Cojuangco failed to make the podium at the Salt Lake City 2018 Hyundai Archery World Cup after losing in the bronze medal round over the weekend.
Cojuangco, seeded 28th after the qualification, lost to French bet and second-ranked Sophie Dodemont, 133-125, to settle for fourth place in the women’s compound event.
Scoring 632 in the qualification, Cojuangco displayed her experience in the medal round by besting No. 37 Laura Longo of Italy in the first round, 145-140, and then stunning fifth-ranked Natalia Avdeeva of Russia, 141-140, in the second round.
Cojuangco continued her winning ways in the third round with another shock win over No. 12 Sandra Herve in a shoot-off, 10-8, after scoring identical 137 points, then surprised fourth-ranked Toja Ellison of Slovenia, 142-140, in the quarterfinals.
Top seed Sara Lopez of Colombia, however, proved too much for Cojuangco as the Filipina lost, 147-138, in the semifinals, before succumbing to Dodemont in the bronze-medal round.
Meanwhile, Nicole Marie Tagle settled for 10th to 17th place in women’s recurve while Paul Marton Dela Cruz and Earl Benjamin Yap finished at 18th to 33rd places in the men’s compound.
The compound men’s team of Joseph Vicencio, Yap and Dela Cruz settled for seventh among nine teams while the compound mixed team of Tagle, Dela Cruz, Vicencio, Yap and Cojuangco placed ninth and last. (Kristel Satumbaga)
