International Master John Marvin Miciano suffered a crushing defeat in the eighth and penultimate round to kiss his title bid goodbye in the XX Obert Internactional Sant Marti 2018 chess championship Friday night in Barcelona, Spain.
Miciano lost to FIDE Master Guha Mitrabha of India to remain with 5.5 points, 1.5 points behind GM Gadir Guseinov.
He was tied by Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales and Woman Grandmaster Janelle Frayna for 10th to 18th places.
Gonzales and Frayna dumped Armenia’s David Davtyan and Sweden’s Andreas Persson.
In the final round, Gonzalez battles GM Kevel Oliva Castaneda of Cuba, while Miciano and Frayna take on Torbjorn Glimbrant of Sweden and IM Alexey Fernandez Cardoso of Cuba, respectively. (Kristel Satumbaga)
