The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) demolished yesterday the barangay hall of Barangay 235, Zone 22 in District II of Manila, which was erected on the sidewalk.
The agency said the barangay officials were given enough time to relocate the hall, but they failed to do so.
The MMDA clearing team demolished the barangay on Villaruel St. because it was encroaching the sidewalk.
“This intensified campaign against obstructions is meant to show that we are serious in our job to clear the roads,” MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim said.
The help of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) was sought by the MMDA in dealing with such violators.
“We also sought the help of DILG Undersecretary for Barangay Affairs Martin Diño who committed to press charges against uncooperative barangay officials,” Lim said.
Diño told MMDA that barangay officials who will be found liable may face grave abuse of authority and dereliction of duty.
Illegally-parked vehicles in the area were also towed by the MMDA to clear the street of obstructions. (Jel Santos)
