International Master John Marvin Miciano revived his bid for a top 10 finish by pulling off back-to-back victories even as Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales remained within the striking distance after six rounds of the Brugse Meesters 2018 in Brugge, Belgium on Tuesday.
Miciano dismantled Belgian rivals Guillaume Chauvon and Nando De Blende in the fifth and sixth rounds, respectively, to jump into a share of 20th to 45th places with four points on three wins, two draws and one loss.
He started the fifth round outside of the top 100.
Also in the group of Miciano was Woman Grandmaster Janelle Frayna, who bounced back from a fifth round defeat with an inspiring win over German Maximilian Ponomarev.
The Olympiad-bound Frayna now has four wins against two losses.
Gonzales, who is coaching Miciano and Frayna in the nine-round tournament, remained one point behind solo leader GM Wan Yunguo of China after producing 1.5 points for 4.5 points.
