University of the Philippines stunned Adamson University, 24-26, 25-19, 25-22, 25-20, and moved within a win of advancing to the finals of the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference women’s tournament yesterday at The Arena in San Juan City.
The fourth-seeded Lady Maroons outgunned the Lady Falcons – thanks to Marian Buitre’s inspired plays in the opener of their best-of-three semis series.
Buitre exploded for 25 points on 23 kills and two blocks as UP also dealt top-seeded Adamson its first loss since completing a seven-game sweep of the elims.
The Lady Maroons likewise avenged their 25-22, 19-25, 25-23, 26-24 defeat to the Lady Falcons last Aug. 12.
With Buitre in front of the assault, UP fought back from six points down midway the fourth frame to grab a 21-18 lead.
Game 2 is set on Saturday.
Meantime, Far Eastern University got back at College of St. Benilde, 25-19, 25-18, 25-19, to catch the last semifinal bus in the men’s division.
John Paul Bugaoan and Peter Quiel joined forces in FEU’s onslaught, scoring 15 and 11 points, respectively, as the Tamaraws completed the semis cast.
