The Bulacan Kuyas came through with the defensive stops when they needed most to beat the Imus Banderas, 117-113, in overtime on Thursday in the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Datu Cup at the Bulacan Capitol gym.
The Kuyas silenced the Banderas in the first four minutes of the extension period while dropping six straight points from Jason Melano, JR Taganas and Jerick Cañada to grab the momentum en route to their seventh win in 10 games.
Backed by Mighty Sports’ Ceasar Angelo Wongchuking, the Kuyas’ victory produced several firsts in the league after making 38 points in the opening period.
By the second period, it was the GLC Truck and Equipment-backed Bandera who matched the feat, scoring 38 of their own. Bulacan’s total points is also a new mark in the league.
Both teams combined for 230 points, also a new record in the league.
Melano led the Kuyas with 22 points, seven rebounds and three assists, John Gonzales and Jovit Dela Cruz chipped in 17 points apiece, and Taganas collared 23 boards.
The Banderas slipped to 5-4 despite Elmer Mykiel Cabahug and Jomari Sollano combining for 34 points.
Meanwhile, the Muntinlupa Cagers crushed the Basilan Steel, 99-75.
Felix Apreku scored 14 points and 11 rebounds while Dhon Reverente finished with 14 points and 14 boards to steer the Cagers to their eighth straight win.
The Steel slipped to 4-6.
