Defending champion La Salle Greenhills edged Lyceum, 80-75, yesterday to secure the first twice-to-beat semifinal bonus in the NCAA juniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
Joshua David fired 20 points while Joel Cagulangan added 13 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Greenies, who also cemented their hold of the No. 1 spot by clinching their 14th victory against two defeats.
It was a different scenario for LSGH compared from last season, where they fought San Sebastian in a playoff for the last Final Four seat, beat San Beda twice in the semifinals, and defeat Mapua in a deciding Game 3 to win the crown.
“This is an unfamiliar situation for us,” said LSGH coach Marvin Bienvenida. “We have little success from this, we just have to handle that success.”
Inand Fornillos also steered the Greenies with 12 points and 13 boards while RC Calimag chipped in 12 points.
Lyceum fell to 9-8 at fifth to put its semis bid in peril.
Meanwhile, San Beda whipped also-ran Arellano, 83-71, to snare the third Final Four berth and join LSGH and Mapua (12-4) in the next phase.
