Kids ranging in age from 5 to 13 years old make up the bulk of the field when the inaugural Fuerza Aquathlon gets going on Sunday at the Philsports Complex (Ultra) in Pasig City.
Of the more than 220 entries in the multisports event, 90 are entered in three age categories for FuerzaKids – the 5-7, 8-10 and 11-13 years groups.
A total of 70 male and female participants are entered in the Standard distance for adults, which involves a 3-km run, 800-meter swim and a 2k run; and 60 are listed in the Lite distance for adults (1k-400m-1k).
Sanctioned by the Philippine Sports Commission through the Muay Thai Association of the Philippines, the event is sponsored by Adele Residences, Unilab, TYR, Brooks, Sports Resources Inc., Drymax, Salice, Supplement Hub, Gardenia, Wheatgrass C.A.N., Garmin, Fitletic, Gu Gels, Unison Bike Shop, Ceepo, Compressports, Milcu and A-Game.
Participants will be provided with swim caps, chip timing, medals, finishers’ shirts, loot bags and gift packs for podium finishers and raffle winners. Loot bags include sponsors’ products and gift vouchers from Brooks Running and Drymax.
Jojo “Jomac’’ Macalintal, head coach of Team Trimac and prime mover of the inaugural Fuerza event, said the number of participants is very encouraging, especially since kids make up a big chunk of the starting field. He said the event aims to introduce kids and beginners to multisport activities like aquathlons, duathlons (run-bike-run) and triathlons (swim-bike-run).
Race kits can be claimed between 4 and 6 a.m. on Sunday at the Fuerza Expo at the PSC track oval and the race briefing will be from 5:30 to 6 a.m. The Standard event kicks off at 6:15 a.m. followed by the Lite event at 6:45, both at the Track Oval.
