Alexa Milliam swept through the girls’ premier division crown with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Sydney Enriquez, completing another three-title romp in the PPS-PEPP La Carlota national age-group tennis tournament at the Lacta-Pontevedra outdoor tennis courts in Negros Occidental recently.
The 14-year-old star dominated her age-group division with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Rose Martirez then held off Enriquez, 6-3, 7-5, in the 16-U singles finals, extending her amazing run in the circuit presented by Dunlop to a third straight week after posting similar feats in Dumaguete and Argao, Cebu.
But while the rising star from Pontevedra, Negros kept her remarkable streak, Davao’s John David Velez, also 14, opted not to compete in his age category but still pulled through with victories in the two higher divisions of the Group 2 tournament sponsored by Palawan Pawnshop headed by president/CEO Bobby Castro.
Velez, who also swept three titles in Dumaguete and Argao, repulsed Ceazar Po, 6-3, 6-4, in the 16-U finals then upended top seed Reynan Mahusay, 6-2, 6-2, to claim the 18-U crown and share the MVP honors with Milliam.
“These two young but talented players are currently in a zone and we expect them to rake in more titles with the way they are playing,” said Castro, adding that the duo’s feats should inspire the other young players to strive and work hard on their respective games.
Other singles winners were Puerto Princesa’s John Kendrick Bona (10-unisex), Elemar Sealza from Iloilo (boys’ 12-U), Faith Banico from Siquijor (girls’ 12-U) and Sal Andrei Lago from Sogod, Leyte (boys’ 14-U), and doubles champions Mahusay and Po (boys’ 18-U), Martirez and Shyryn Salazar (girls’ 18-U), Khenz Justiniani and Pete Rodriguez (boys’ 14-U), Banico and Sheena Uy (girls’ 14-U), and Bona and Daveaine Gauran (10-unisex).
