Diliman College boosted its bid for a twice-to-beat advantage in the semis with a 107-69 drubbing of also-ran Philippine Christian University-Dasmariñas yesterday in the Universities and Colleges Basketball League (UCBL) Season 3 at the Olivarez College in Parañaque City.
It was apparent right from the start that Diliman intended to win the game in style as the Blue Dragons threw the Dolphins out of their comfort zone with their pressure defense and impressive outside shooting.
Robby Darang once again typified Diliman’s fine showing with a double-double effort of 22 points spiked by two triples and 10 assists.
The wily Darang also had seven rebounds as Diliman extended their winning run to seven games for an overall record of 9-1.
Meantime, Olivarez College survived Lyceum of the Philippines-Batangas 78-76, to clinch the third semis berth in the 7-team tournament backed by CaféFrance, Yakult, Gerry’s Grill, Hapee Toothpaste, MaxSell Power Tool and Tough Mama Home and Kitchen Appliances, Tanduay Athletics and Toyota Motor Philippines.
In his best game so far, Dale Begaso produced a double-double of 17 points and 11 boards while Elie Yani added 14 points and 20 boards as the Sea Lions improved to 8-2.
Aside from retaking the solo lead, the win was certainly a big boost for the Blue Dragons who will dispute the No. 1 seed with Centro Escolar University on Nov. 22. The CEU Scorpions hold an 8-1 mark.
