I REMEMBER a particular episode on our Matanglawin TV, “Pumapag-ibig” (Sundays at 9:45 a.m. on ABS-CBN).
We talked about the origin of Red Roses, which are popular in Greek and Roman mythology.
In Greek mythology, the red symbolizes the blood of Adonis. In Roman mythology, red symbolizes the tears of Venus, the goddess of love.

Here in the Philippines, Benguet is known as the rose capital of the Philippines.
Because roses are known to have short shelf life, the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) has invented what is known as modified atmosphere packing technology which extends the shelf life of roses up to 30 days.
Angel Basbasan Jr., DoST Science Research Specialist 2, said that this new modification in packaging increases the percentage of oxygen the roses get, thus extending its life.
This innovation kept flowers fresh despite the rigorous travel time from Benguet to parts of the country.

Ever heard of the Belle Flower? Hannah de Guzman of Aesthetic Flowers experimented on this flower that is similar to the one in the movie “Beauty and the Beast.”
According to Hannah, the Belle Flower must be away from direct sunlight. It must not be watered and exposed to humidity.
The flowers undergo dehydration technique wherein the stem is cut and the flower left soaked in alcohol for 1-2 days.
Then, it is bleached and colored in different hues. Each Belle Flower costs 5,500 pesos.
