Tropical depression “Samuel” entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility Sunday morning and could bring moderate to heavy rains over parts of Mindanao starting Monday.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration said Samuel entered the PAR around 10 a.m. and was estimated at 980 kilometers east-southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur around noon Sunday, with maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 65 kph.
PAGASA said moderate to heavy rains which may trigger flooding and landslides may prevail over Caraga, Davao Oriental, and Compostela Valley beginning today.
Forecasters said Samuel may make landfall over Northern Mindanao Tuesday.
Residents of these areas, especially those living near or in river channels, low-lying, and mountainous areas, are advised to take precautionary measures and coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices.
It also advised fisherfolk and those with small sea crafts not to venture out over the eastern seaboards of Visayas and of Mindanao due to the approaching tropical cyclone.
Meanwhile, another storm with international name “Toraji” was estimated at 945 kilometers west of Puerto Princesa City and is currently moving southwest slowly towards southern Vietnam.
However, it has no direct impact on any part of the Philippines. (Ellalyn V. Ruiz)
