Games Wednesday
(Batangas City Coliseum)
4 p.m. – Adamson-Akari vs Pocari-Air Force
6 p.m. – PetroGazz vs Creamline
PetroGazz put an end to Pocari-Air Force and Tacloban’s backdoor bids with an emphatic 25-21, 25-9, 25-15 victory over Adamson-Akari Sunday night to clinch the fourth and last semifinal berth in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.
The Angels rode on the heroics of Alyssa Layug to beat the Lady Falcons, sweep their back-to-back weekend matches and join BanKo-Perlas, Ateneo-Motolite and Creamline in the Final Four with an 8-5 card.
PetroGazz, led by Jessey de Leon’s 14 hits, also slammed the door shut on Pocari-Air Force and Tacloban, which had hoped for an Adamson victory to stay in the hunt for a playoff for the last semis seat.
The Lady Warriors earlier trounced Iriga-Navy, 25-23, 25-20, 25-20, to tie the Fighting Warays at fifth at 6-7 but the victory was put to naught by the Angels’ straight-set romp over the Lady Falcons.
The last two playdates of the double round elims in Batangas City on Wednesday and Saturday will thus serve as the battle for positioning in the Final Four among Creamline, BanKo-Perlas and PetroGazz.
BanKo-Perlas seized the No. 1 spot at 10-3 following Ateneo’s four-set loss to the Angels Saturday with the Lady Eagles finishing with a 10-4.
Top spiker Eli Soyud finally showed up for Adamson after missing a number of games due to injury but her presence hardly mattered for the fired-up Angels, who held off the Lady Eagles, 19-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-23, late Saturday to virtually nail the last semis seat.
