Arellano University jumpstarted its title bids in the men’s and women’s divisions on winning notes yesterday after dumping their opponents in NCAA volleyball at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Chiefs, who lost to the University of Perpetual Help Altas in last season’s finals, swept the Jose Rizal University Bombers, 25-21, 25-18, 25-21, while defending champions Lady Chiefs whipped the JRU Lady Bombers, 25-15, 25-22, 25-22.
Reigning Finals Most Valuable Player Regine Arocha and Necole Ebuen carried the fight for the Lady Chiefs, who overcame their sloppy plays before taking advantage of the Lady Bombers’ weak defense.
Arocha finished with 11 points built on eight kills, two blocks and one ace while Ebuen chipped in 10 points.
Their men’s counterpart, meanwhile, banked on its rock-solid defense by posting 16 blocks – six from Jethro Cabillan – to stop JRU. (Kristel Satumbaga)
