The Pasay City police intelligence chief was killed in an encounter with the suspect in the killing of a Grab driver last year during a follow-up operation Sunday.
Senior Insp. Manuel Taytayon was declared dead on arrival at the San Juan de Dios Hospital in Pasay after he sustained bullet wounds in the chest.
The target of their operation was suspect Marc Delemios, the alleged perpetrator in the killing of a Grab driver in October last year.
Delemios was tagged in the killing of Grab driver Gerardo Maquidato Jr., who was recognized after he transported a diabetic, who was picking up bags of blood for her dialysis, without charge. The suspect was identified by her live-in partner who told police that her phone was used to book the ride.
Investigation showed that intelligence operatives received information that the suspect was hiding in the house of his relative on Don Carlos St. Barangay 148, Zone 16.
According to Senior Supt. Noel Flores, Pasay police chief, a group led by Taytayon went to the house to verify the information. They confirmed that the suspect was at the house and asked him to surrender but instead of yielding, he fired shots that hit Taytayon.
The suspect was later cornered at the rooftop of the house where he died on the spot after a shootout with police.
Delemios escaped from the Pasay City Jail last August after prying open the ceiling of a stock room on the fourth floor where Batang City Jail members are detained and broke through the ceiling, escaping through the roof.
The suspect was facing charges of carnapping and robbery with homicide before the Pasay egional Trial Court Branch 115 and murder before the Parañaque City Regional Trial Court.
Taytayon has been serving as intelligence chief of the Pasay police for the past two to three months, according to Flores. (Dhel Nazario)
