Typhoon “Tomas” (international name “Man-yi”) could reenter the Philippine Area of Responsibility within the next 12 to 18 hours but is less likely to make landfall over any part of the country.
Around noon Sunday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration estimated the location of Tomas at 1,505 kilometers east of Aparri, Cagayan or outside the country’s area of responsibility, moving slowly southwest and maintaining maximum sustained winds of 145 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 180 kph.
While Tomas is not expected to make landfall, PAGASA warned of risky sea travel over the seaboards of Northern Luzon and the eastern seaboards of Central and Southern Luzon and Visayas due to rough to very rough seas associated with the surge of northeast monsoon or “amihan.”
PAGASA expects Tomas to be 1,210 kms east of Aparri Monday morning and 965 kms east of Basco, Batanes Tuesday morning. On Wednesday morning, Tomas will be 975 kms east-northeast of Basco and outside the PAR Thursday.
Meanwhile, the amihan will be the prevailing weather system over most of the country Monday.
Cloudy skies with light rains will be felt over Cagayan Valley and partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains over the Ilocos region and Cordillera Administrative Region.
Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms. (Ellalyn V. Ruiz)
