MATALAM, North Cotabato – Two teachers died while 42 of their students were injured when a truck carrying them plunged into a 20-foot ravine in Alamada town in this province on Saturday.
Police identified the fatalities as Melanie Iglesia and Tohane Macalipat, both teachers of the national high school in Kabacan, a town adjacent here.
Probers said the ill-fated teachers and their students, 42 of them injured, were returning from an excursion at the Asik-asik waterfalls in the interior town Alamada of this province when the accident happened.
Sketchy report stated that the driver may have lost control when the truck’s brakes malfunctioned.
The incident was the latest of almost a dozen of bloody accidents along road networks in this province in less than two months. Most of the mishaps happened last October, during which residents proposed the declaration of such period “accident awareness month.”
Last Oct. 8, Mohammad Saaduddin, a Central Mindanao-based correspondent of the Manila times, died when his motorcycle rammed the rear section of a hauler truck. (Ali Macabalang)
