A DRUG suspect who sought refuge in his hometown in Puerto Galera after his escape from San Pedro City Jail in Laguna was killed during a drug bust in Oriental Mindoro.
Supt. Imelda Tolentino, spokesperson of the MIMAROPA (Mindoro Oriental and Occidental, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) regional police, said a buy-bust was immediately mapped out after a police intelligence officer was able to negotiate for the purchase of shabu with a certain Benjo Gayod.
But during the transaction that occurred in Baragay Sabang in Puerto Galera on Sunday, Gayod sensed that he was dealing with a cop which prompted him to shoot the latter.
“Our operatives retaliated and this resulted in his death,” said Tolentino.
During the background check, it was found out that Gayod was one of the six inmates of the San Pedro City Police Jail who escaped on May 23 this year.
The escape resulted in the relief of the city police director of San Pedro City and two other cops who were then acting as jail guards.
Seized from Gayod were the marked money, a .38-caliber revolver and a sachet of shabu.
A background check revealed that Gayod reportedly went into hiding in Oriental Mindoro after the escape. He then engaged in drug-dealing to earn money. (Aaron Recuenco)
