BACOOR CITY – Smart regained its winning ways as it asserted its mastery over Sta. Lucia, 25-23, 25-19, 25-19, in the Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference Tuesday at the Bacoor Strike Gym here.
Skipper Aiko Urdas and Jerrili Malabanan provided the spark for the Giga Hitters to finally end their three-game skid in the women’s club tourney bankrolled by Isuzu, Sogo, Mueller, Senoh, Asics, Mikasa, Mueller, UCPB Gen and Bizooku with Genius Sports as technical provider.
Urdas and Malabanan dropped 13 points apiece while Joyce Sta. Rita chipped in seven hits for the Giga Hitters, who also drew five hits and 14 excellent receptions from national team member Grethcel Soltones.
Despite improving to a 3-5 win-loss record in this tourney that also has ESPN5, Hyper HD and Aksyon TV as broadcast partners, Smart head coach Roger Gorayeb was still not convinced.
“All wins are important to us right now because we’re not on top of the standings. I have yet to see the real game of my team,” Gorayeb said.
The Giga Hitters nearly played without setters as Jasmine Nabor and Angel Cayuna who both had academic commitments at National University and Far Eastern University, respectively.
Nabor, however, decided to suit up and finished with 31 excellent sets on top of 16 digs and four points.
