After bringing home five gold medals from the 1st Asian Traditional Wushu Championship in Nanjing, China, the national wushu team is hoping to reproduce the same winning formula in the SEA Games which the country is hosting late next year.
“Our focus is more on the SEA Games,” said Daniel Parantac in Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum at Tapa King in Cubao, Quezon City. “Because this is a major event for the country, we have to show our class.”
Parantac and Agatha Wong accounted for three of the five gold medals captured by the national team.
The two were joined by their national teammates Johnzenth Gajo and Jones Llabre in the forum backed by Tapa King, San Miguel Corporation and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR).
Wong topped the taijijian and taijiquan, while Parantac won one in taijijian along with Llabare and Thornton Quieney, Lou Sayan, with Gajo accounting for two more in changquan and daoshu. Degala and Gainzan each won a bronze medal.
Although all of them welcome the presence of crowd support in the SEA Games, Wong and Parantac said it could also add pressure on the team’s bid to make up for the one gold medal the Filipinos won in the 2017 edition of the meet in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
“The factor of support system is good, pero during performance, I try to set aside it and focus on my form,” said Wong, who accounted for a bronze medal in the last Asian Games in Indonesia, during the session presented by San Miguel Corporation, Tapa King, and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation.
