WE’VE always known that dogs have very special qualities or characteristics that make them lovable to people.
But, have you ever heard of a dog that helped her human heal herself from cancer?
A story posted on Yahoo News recently told of a pooch with a truly acute sense. She was able to sniff out her owner’s illness.
According to Yahoo, Stephanie Herfel, a Wisconsin native, had been suffering from abdominal pain when her newly acquired Siberian husky, Sierra, displayed her special ability.
“She put her nose on my lower belly and sniffed so intently that I thought I spilled something on my clothes,” Herfel told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Herfel then saw her gynecologist, who told her she had an ovarian cyst.
Sierra sensed her illness.
The dog acted strangely again months later, hiding inside a closet.
It was then that the gynecologist confirmed Herfel had stage 3 ovarian cancer.
She underwent hysterectomy, followed by chemotherapy.
Another time, in 2015, the cancer manifested itself again. Herfel’s dog showed the same unusual behaviour, cuddling up to her, seemingly afraid.
Herfel now says she owes her life to her dog, who was never wrong in her “findings.”
It is said that Sierra isn’t the only dog that can sense illness in its owner. Other dogs have shown the same special ability.
According to Ashley Wagner of Wisconsin Ovarian Cancer Alliance, it’s as if the dog knows what’s going on and is scared.
