The all-time favorite Christmas carol “Silent Night” is now 200 years old.
The song was first performed on Dec. 24, 1818, at St. Nicholas church in Obendorf, a small town near the city of Salzburg in Austria.
The song is credited to Franz Gruber, a teacher, and the then new parish priest of the village, Father Joseph Mohr.
It was created one cold, snowy Christmas eve.
The lyrics of “Silent Night” began as a poem Mohr had written years prior, called “Stille Nacht.” Mohr asked Gurber to compose a melody for the poem, and thus was born the classic Christmas carol.
