Iloilo Rep. Richard Garin and his father, Guimbal, Iloilo Mayor Oscar Garin Sr., heeded the Philippine National Police order and surrendered their firearms yesterday after their gun licenses and permits had been ordered cancelled.
A report from Chief Supt. John Bulalacao, director of the Western Visayas Police Regional Office, said the younger Garin surrendered to the Iloilo police nine of his eleven firearms, eight of which have expired licenses, while the other one is a sub-machine gun.
On the other hand, the elder Garin yielded five of his eights guns which licenses were also expired.
The Garins gave up their guns after PNP chief, Director General Oscar Albayalde, said the Garins might end up in jail should they continue to refuse surrendering their firearms.
“They have expired licenses and if they fail to surrender that, they can be subjected to a search warrant,” he added.
Carrying an unlicensed firearm is a violation of Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.
Albayalde cancelled all Permits to Carry Firearms Outside of Residence and License to Own and Possess Firearms of the Garins after they allegedy mauled PO3 Federico Macaya who is assigned to Guimbal police station. (Martin Sadongdong)
