LAS VEGAS – A victory over Manny Pacquiao this Saturday will likely be the centerpiece chapter on the life story of Adrien Broner.
Broner is set to challenge Pacquiao for the World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight crown at the MGM Grand and a win over the Filipino eight-division champion will go down as a landmark event in his career.
“I’m so focused that I don’t feel any of this hype surrounding the fight. This just starts another chapter in my book. I’m still writing my story and it’s going to have a happy ending,” said Broner, who is the heavy underdog in the scheduled 12-rounder.
Still, Broner, 29, relishes the role of underdog.
“I’m just excited I’m the underdog and I know there are a lot of people that are here to see me lose.”
But “this is just my time and this fight was perfectly timed and I will take advantage of it.”
Citing that he had “one of my best camps,” a win over the 40-year-old Pacquiao will go down as his best showing ever. “After this fight, it will evaporate everything I did in the past,”
Broner said, stressing that a win “will definitely be a big statement in my career.”
Leonard Ellerbe, the Chief Executive Officer of Mayweather Promotions, which has a stake in Broner, feels the Cincinnati native has a solid shot at ruining Pacquiao’s grand plans for a Mayweather rematch.
“Adrien is razor sharp and he knows what he has got to do (to beat Pacquiao),” Ellerbe said.
Even Pacquiao is wary of Broner.
“I rate him a 7 or 8. He is a good fighter,” said Pacquiao.
On Saturday, Broner will attempt to prove Pacquiao wrong by putting up a perfect ten performance.
