ALAIN Robert, 56, popularly known as the “French Spiderman”, was held by police Wednesday morning after he scaled a 45-storey building in Makati City.
Chief Inspector Gideon Ines Jr., Makati police assistant chief for operations, said Robert was with his lawyer when he was brought to the police headquarters.
“He was with his lawyer. Robert said that he anticipated that he might encounter a problem in the Philippines that’s why his lawyer was on standby already near the GT Tower,” he said.
True enough, Robert had done such in other countries. However, due to his perilous acts, he was banned from climbing any UK building.
The silver-haired “French Spiderman” started climbing the GT Tower around 10 a.m., Ines said.
“He was only using bare hands. Robert was not wearing any gloves, as if he was Spiderman. He went up and down,” Ines recalled. “He was not wearing any safety gear like harness.”
After reaching the top floor, he immediately went down around 11:30 a.m.
“We then invited him to the headquarters after he reached the ground,” the police official said
Many people watched and recorded the risky act of Robert using their smartphones.
Ines said the vehicular traffic was also disrupted as people stopped to check the cause of the commotion.
The Makati rescue team also went to the area and set up an inflatable rescue/jump cushion to catch the climber should he accidentally falls. (Jel Santos)
