The Philippine Skating Union (PHSU) is celebrating a new accomplishment in short track after 15-year-old Julian Macaraeg made history by qualifying for the Youth Olympic Games 2020 in Japan.
The 15-year-old’s feat marked the first time the Philippines will be appearing in the Winter Youth Olympics after registering a qualifying time of 43.7 seconds in the 500-meter event on Tuesday at the ISU World Short Track Championships in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Ranked 42nd in the world, Macaraeg emerged as the best Southeast Asian in the 500-meter and 1,000-meter qualification rounds.
Based on the computations, the Philippines will have a safe spot on number 27 out of 32 countries qualified. Together with Macaraeg is Marc Gonzales, the country’s main man for the upcoming SEA Games.
