University of Perpetual Help inched closer to a fifth straight juniors crown after dispatching Letran, 25-15, 25-19, 25-19, yesterday in NCAA volleyball at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Junior Altas needed only 58 minutes in toppling the Squires, overpowering them with sharp attacks to draw the first blood on their best-of-three championship affair.
They also moved a victory away from a title sweep after earning an outright finals berth with an unbeaten nine-game eliminations run.
Michael Kampton poured all his 16 points on kills to spearhead Perpetual, while Hero Austria fired 14 points built on 12 spikes and two aces.
Sherwin Caritativo took charge of the Junior Altas’ floor defense by managing 12 digs while Christian Hidalgo provided smart plays with 23 excellent sets.
Letran, which advanced to the finals after surviving Lyceum in the stepladder semis, had Christian dela Cruz and Mark Omega merging for 23 points but their efforts went futile against a more experienced Perpetual crew.
Game 2 is set on Friday next week with the Squires aiming for the win to extend the series into a rubber match.
