A policeman assigned to Makati City was gunned down by two motorcycle-riding gunmen while on his way to work yesterday in Malate, Manila.
The Manila Police District identified the victim as SPO1 Reynaldo Jimenez, 55, of Pasay City and assigned to the Warrant Section of the Makati police.
Investigation showed that Jimenez was driving his black Honda Civic and was about to cross an intersection on Arellano Ave. corner Zobel Roxas St. when two unidentified men riding a motorcycle appeared and opened fire at him at past 8 a.m.
Closed circuit television camera (CCTV) footage showed the gunmen shooting the victim through the driver’s side window. Traffic was unusually light at the time of the attack.
Jimenez was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead due to multiple bullet wounds.
Ten spent shells for a .45 caliber pistol were recovered from the crime scene.
According to relatives, the victim has no known enemy.
Further investigation is underway to determine the persons and the motive behind the killing, case investigator PO3 John Bucad of the MPD Homicide Section said.
Makati police spokesperson Insp. Gideon Ines Jr. said Jimenez was due for retirement next year.
Ines said Jimenez had been suspended once for absence without leave, but was nevertheless a good police officer.
He said they always tap Jimenez to arrest high-profile suspects which could be one of the motives for the broad daylight murder. “Baka may mga naapakan siyang malaking tao,” said Ines. (Ria Fernandez)
