Newly crowned WBC Inter-Continental and WBA Asian lightweight champion Romero Duno is set to fight in the undercard of the Canelo Alvarez title bout this May in Las Vegas.
Dubbed as the ‘Ruthless’, the 23-year-old Duno is fresh from a knockout win against Kuldeep Dhanda with the Indian hitting the canvas face-first with 1:19 left in the second round.
Duno said that though Golden Boy Promotions, which co-promotes him with Sanman Promotions, has informed him that he will fight in May, his next opponent remains a question.
“My upcoming fight, according to Golden Boy Promotions, they said that my next fight is May 5 in Las Vegas,” said Duno as he attended the PBA Games Wednesday night at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena in Pasay City.
“Wala pa, pero pag-uwi ko sa Gen San mag-uumpisa na ako mag-ensayo para sa undercard ng Canelo fight,” (I still have no opponent but when I get back home in General Santos City, I’ll start training for the undercard of the Canelo fight.)
The fight Duno is referring to is the Alvarez – from Mexico – championship bout against American Danny Jacobs scheduled May 4, or on the eve of Cinco de Mayo at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Duno’s latest win improved his ring record to 19-1 with 15 KOs.
Aside from Duno, the Sanman Promotions is also setting up the fights for the ‘Assassin’ Reymart Gaballo and Dave ‘Dobermann’ Apolinario with support coming from Cong. Mikee Romero of the 1-Pacman Party-List.
“Cong. Mikee is very supportive to our boxers,” said JC Manangquil, Sanman Promotions’ Chief Executive Officer (CEO). “All their needs, he was the main big reason why the show (fight) happened.”
Gaballo defeated Japanese Yuya Nakamura to be the No. 1 contender in the bantamweight division – a possible fight against Filipino champion Nonito Donaire – while Apolinario claimed the WBC Asia Flyweight Youth Champion belt with a win against Ramshane Sarguilla.
