The Department of Transportation (DOTr) heeded the proposed one-week delay of the closure of Tandang Sora interchange and flyover to give time to strengthen public awareness and prepare motorists on traffic situation in the area.
In its statement issued on Thursday, the transportation department said it “accedes to the request of Congress and the local council of Quezon City to postpone the closure of the Tandang Sora interchange and flyover by one week.”
“While we want the construction of the MRT-7 to proceed as fast as possible, the DOTr also understands that major adjustments have to be made by residents, commuters and motorists who will be affected by the said closure,” the DOTr said.
The Quezon City Council has proposed to postpone the closure of the flyover for them to iron out everything needed in the project including intensive information drives on alternate routes for affected motorists as many are still unaware.
The closure, which was originally set to begin on Saturday, February 23, for the construction of Metro Rail Transit-7 (MRT-7) Tandang Sora Station, was moved to March 2.
“We take this postponement as a period to strengthen public awareness and cooperation for the project, as this would give individuals and agencies ample time to prepare and manage the traffic situation in the area,” the Department added.
According to the DOTr, its private partner for the MRT-7 project, San Miguel Corporation, has also agreed to the one-week postponement of road closure.
“We appeal for understanding and cooperation from the public as we make all means possible to deliver these projects efficiently,” the DOTr stated. (Alexandria San Juan)
