The water level of dams supplying Metro Manila is decreasing amid a dry spell and drought hitting some provinces due to a weak El Niño phenomenon.
Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration hydrologist Jason Bausa said yesterday that the water level at the La Mesa Dam in Quezon City is now at critical level.
According to Bausa, as of 6 a.m. yesterday, the reservoir water level dipped to 69.25 meters from 69.35 meters the other day.
The latest water level of La Mesa Dam is 10.90 meters below the normal high water level of 80.15 meters and close to the very critical level of 69 meters.
This is the lowest water level recorded at the La Mesa Dam within three years.
Bausa said that while the water level at the La Mesa Dam continues to decline, Angat Dam in Bulacan, which also supplies water to Metro Manila, is still able to supply water to La Mesa Dam.
“Nasa low water level po ang La Mesa Dam, critical level na po, pero nasusupplyan po ito ng Angat kaya nafifill-up po nito yung mga kailangan,” he explained.
However, Bausa bared that the water level in Angat Dam is already below its normal high water level. Angat’s water level yesterday was 201.89 meters from 202.30 meters Wednesday. (Alexandria San Juan)
