Senzo Ikeda came in as a replacement opponent for Filipino prodigy Danny “The King” Kingad in the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix quarter-finals after Andrew Leone pulled out of the contest due to an injury.
Much has been said about Kingad’s preparation, but does Ikeda have what it takes to give trouble to the young Team Lakay standout? Looking at his resume, he certainly can.
Ikeda is currently the reigning Pancrase Flyweight World Champion, with a professional record of 12-6-1.
The 36-year-old veteran is riding high on a four-match winning streak, with his last victory coming from fellow ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix participant Yuya “Little Piranha” Wakamatsu.
In his resume alone, Kingad knows he is in for a long night.
“Senzo Ikeda is a talented competitor, and he has a lot of momentum behind him with four-straight wins, but I am confident in my capabilities and my skills,” he said.
Other than his experienced standing as a competitor, Ikeda’s style could also give Kingad problems.
Ikeda is an undefeated professional boxer, winning all of his eight bouts as a pro. His background as a boxer gives him a chance to match-up with Kingad on the feet if it stays there.
For Ikeda, he vows not to waste the opportunity given to him by ONE Championship.
“Being among these talented flyweights is truly an honor, and I will not waste my chance to make a name for myself in ONE,” Ikeda stated.
“Being on this massive card in my home country of Japan motivates me to perform to the best of my abilities and advance into the next stage of the tournament.
“I have nothing but respect for Danny Kingad, but come event night, I will do everything that I can to get the victory.”
