The Philippines made heads turn by finishing a surprise third in the recent Alberta Cup Provincial Championship at the Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, Canada.
Rolando Isidro and Jerby Deriada overcame tough odds to make in to the podium in the 9-team field.
“This is a historic accomplishment for the Philippines. This is the first time we trained and competed in North America and we came in third place,” said Thelmo Cunanan, president and CEO of the Philippine National Bobsled Luge and Skeleton Association.
The third place finish bodes well to the country’s preparation for the Winter Olympics in 2022.
“Our goal is to continue training in Calgary and to join qualifying races for the Beijing Winter Olympics,” Cunanan said.
