ILAGAN, Isabela – Dasmariñas City continued its dominance in chess after a four-gold sweep of the standard event yesterday in the 2019 Batang Pinoy Luzon leg championships at the Xentro Mall lobby here.
Eleven-year-old Gio Troy Ventura downed Eowyn Jullado of Tayabas in a 55-move victory of a Sicilian Defense in the seventh and final round to rule the boys 12-under, joining teammates Daren Dela Cruz, Jeryln Mae San Diego and Michael Concio Jr. at the helm
Ventura actually finished tied with Tanauan City’s Gladimir Romero with identical six points but the former prevailed after the tiebreak.
San Diego also reigned supreme in the girls 13-under via superior quotient after tying with Pasig City’s Josemier Jene Panol at the helm with six points, while Dela Cruz topped the girls 15-under with six points.
Concio, for his part, ruled the boys 15-under over with 6.5 points after beating Manuel Maglunog of Sta. Maria, Bulacan in 29 moves of Queen’s Pawn London System in the seventh and last round.
At the City of Ilagan Sports Complex, Rufo Aidan Raguine bucked a left ankle sprain he sustained on Thursday’s triple jump event and teamed up with Red Banaag, Irish Cabanayan and Juntine Muñoz for the boys 4x100m relay gold in 46 seconds.
It was Raguine’s third gold medal after also ruling the long jump on Wednesday and the triple jump.
Other winners were Baguio City’s Hussein Loraña in boys 5000m (17:16.00), Camarines Sur’s Gilber Velasco in boys high jump (1.65m), Pangasinan’s Gennalyn Estrada in girls shot put (10.68m), Biñan City’s Laurize Wangkay in girls 2000m walk (11:34.80) and Laguna’s Janine Dauba, Kyla Elona, Magvrylle Matchino and Evita Belloso in girls 4x100m (52sec).
