A peace covenant was signed by Manila mayoral candidates at the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros, Manila yesterday.
The Commission on Elections and Church-based election watchdog group Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting hosted the covenant signing.
The Comelec challenged the candidates to respect the covenant and ensure that the elections will be orderly, honest, and peaceful.
Of the three most popular candidates for mayor, only former Mayor Alfredo S. Lim was able to attend.
Reelectionist Mayor Joseph Estrada was represented by City Administrator Erickson Alcovendaz.
Former Manila Vice Mayor Isko Moreno was late for the covenant signing, signed the integrity pledge outside the Manila Cathedral.
“We are one with the Commission on Elections in running a free, orderly, honest, peaceful, and credible elections. We commit to run a clean, fair and honest campaign,” Moreno said.
Police Brig. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr., Manila Police District chief, who also attended the covenant signing, maintained that they will remain apolitical during the elections. (Minka Tiangco)
