POISON, Motley Crue, and Kiss became popular augmenting their music with innovative use of fashion.
Only a few here are brave enough to actually try and ape the approach, among them the Cavite-based quintet Ezzy Rocks as led by vocalist Ezzy Monzon.
For Eezy, dressing up to rock is innate.
“Sa glam rock kasi talaga ako namulat at ‘dun din ako sa type ng music na ‘yun na-expose when Iwas in high school,” he says.
He lays blame on Kiss.
“Nagsimula ‘yan sa Kiss. Everytime Isee Kiss in their videos, parang gusto maging kagaya nila.”
That’s exactly what he did, forming SS109 in the summer of 2010.
“The band name was inspired by ammunition known to penetrate steel,” he says, proudly.
SS109 didn’t exactly pan out the way he wanted though, and as such he decided to hang his leather pants, going on to dive into real estate for several years.
But the need to rock was in Eezy’s veins.
Pretty soon, he gathered several likeminded Cavitenos to his cause forming Eezy Rocks with Richard Sunga and Earl Arcilla on guitars, Jun Pineda on bass, and Jun Gonzales on drums.
They have since released the album “Loud and Clear” along with the single “Headbang.”
With their flamboyant get up, Ezzy believes success is just around the corner.
“Rock is really fashion and music rolled into one. We put on makeup and the best rocker dress we have because we believe it adds character to our music. Iba eh. Mga customized ang costume namin, although we also source some from department stores.” (RONNIE REYES)
