SPECULATION now abound as to who will don Darna’s red bikini with Liza Soberano bowing out of the project recently due to “medical reasons.”
Apparently, Soberano is worried about a broken finger, which she said might ultimately hinder her from doing her utmost in bringing to life the super heroine.
While there are fans saddened by the news, not a few actually took it with glee, obviously buoyed by the possibility of their own idol grabbing the chance to portray onscreen the popular komiks character, joining a glorified list that include the likes of Gina Pareño, Vilma Santos, Lorna Tolentino, Sharon Cuneta, Nanette Medved, Anjanette Abayari, Regine Velasquez, Angel Locsin, and Marian Rivera.
There are those who are strongly suggesting Nadine Lustre, noting the surprise success of “Ulan,” her first starrer minus reel and real love James Reid.
Then again, there is also strong clamor for Maymay Entrata, pointing out how the former “Pinoy Big Brother” housemate is enjoying unprecedented popularity among the younger set.
Other names thrown in the mix include former Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach, Anne Curtis, Erich Gonzales, and Jessy Mendiola.
Meanwhile, some believe the project should be scrapped altogether, suggesting how it was supposedly “jinxed” ever since original choice Locsin reluctantly left the project several years back due to an injury.
They pointed to original director Erik Matti also resigning from the project a little later supposedly because of “creative differences” with film producer, Star Cinema, as proof.
The film company, a subsidiary of network giant ABS-CBN, is unbowed, however.
In a statement, it said preparations for the project will continue, as it remains “fully committed in telling the well-loved story of the Filipina super heroine.”
Star Cinema added they have actually “started the selection process for the new actress who will bring the iconic character to life on the big screen.”
It wasn’t revealed who they are exactly eyeing for the part.
Matti’s replacement, Jerrold Tarog, is also still seemingly bullish about it all.
Reacting to fan feedback on him following Locsin, Matti and Soberano, he said, “Hindi naman. Busy pa din kami. They informed me about Liza’s decision weeks ago. I was quite sad about it, but her health is more important. Abangan niyo na lang kung sino ang bagong Darna.” (NEIL RAMOS)
