A portion of a three-story residential building, which used to be the Madonna Maternity Hospital in Binondo, Manila, collapsed on Wednesday night.
According to Joseph Bulanon, chief engineer of the Manila City Hall, the 50-year-old structure on Veronica Street in Barangay 288, Binondo, partly gave way at around 8 p.m.
Bulanon said no one was injured or killed, but he asked the tenants occupying the part of the building to vacate the premises for their safety.
The building’s condition deteriorated over the years since it was built after World War 2, Bulanon added.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the collapse, but they are considering the age of the building as one factor.
Edgar Lim, the owner of the building, vowed to clear the street of the debris. (Erma Edera)
