IBAAN, Batangas – A rented passenger jeepney missed a right turn off a steep downhill and slammed into a concrete barrier, killing five persons and injuring 14 others Saturday morning in Barangay Balanga.
Among the dead was the driver, Wilfredo Macabudbod, 59, of Calamba, Laguna, according to Patrolman Anthony Penid of Ibaan police.
The other fatalities are the Cule couple – Philip and Bernadette, Nelia Braza, and Monica Paragas. Except for the driver, all passengers were related to each other.
They were all declared dead on arrival at the Batangas Medical Center in Batangas City.
Penid said among the injured were six minors. They were brought to different hospitals in Calamba, Laguna, Lipa City, and Batangas City. Three patients remain in critical condition.
According to the police, the jeepney, with plate number DVA 741, was bound for Lobo, Batangas when the driver miscalculated the steep part of the road and hit the barrier around 11:15 a.m.
In Calauag, Quezon, a mother died while her two offspring were injured after the tricycle they were riding on figured in an accident in Barangay Binutas Sunday here.
The fatality was identified as Ma. Arvie Joy Liwanag Robis, 24, a resident of Barangay Sabang Dos while those hurt were her children Joliane, 5-month-old and Rowie, 2.
Police said the tricycle driven by Remuel Noriesta, 25, swerved to the opposite lane around 10 p.m. and hit an oncoming van driven by Arnold Lazarte Paulite, 42, a resident of Purok 3, Sirang Lupa, Calamba City and a motorcycle driven by Richard Abad Olarte, 39, of Bacoor, Cavite.
The motorcycle driver and his back riders were injured and brought to the hospital.
In San Pablo City, six vehicles figured in a multiple collision along Maharlika Highway in Barangay II-F early morning yesterday. No one was injured.
The report said the vehicles involved were a Hyundai Elantra Sedan with conduction sticker number MT1151 driven by Ephraim Genonangan, Nissan Shuttle Van (JBR 721) driven by Randy Ryan Avengoza, Toyota Jeep 4X with plate number TDF 745 driven by Danilo Francisco, Izusu FVR bus (AAH 616) driven by Edgardo Petes Jr, Suzuki Kabayan Honey (YAB 616) driven by Efipanio Orig Jr. and Isuzu Bus with plate number TYK829 driven by Priscilla Baeta Jr. (With reports from Danny Estacio)
