Abegail Arevalo sparkled with a five-under par 67 to lead the Philippine campaign at the start of the Women’s Asia Pacific golf championship yesterday at the Royal Golf Club in Ibaraki, Japan.
Arevalo, a senior at San Jose State, made six birdies against a lone bogey to trail solo leader Becky Kay of Australia who sizzled with a 64.
She’s the highest-placed Filipina at joint fifth.
Bianca Pagdanganan, a member of the national team that won the gold in the Asian Games last year, shot a 65 while Asiad champion Yuka Saso opened with a 70.
Clare Legaspi and Mikhaela Denise Fortuna were the only other Filipinas who broke par after submitting identical 71s.
Francesca Bernice Olivares Ilas, the only other Filipina in the field, turned in a 76.
