President Duterte on Sunday paid his last respects to the late House Speaker Prospero C. Nograles, hoping his legacy will inspire other politicians to serve the country well.
The President visited the wake of Nograles at the Heritage Park in Taguig City and offered his condolences to his family.
Nograles, the first Mindanaoan who became leader of the House of Representatives, passed away Saturday after a respiratory failure secondary to pneumonia, according to his son Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles. The former Davao City lawmaker was 71.
The President has expressed grief over the passing of Nograles, his erstwhile rival in their home city of Davao years ago, and remembered him for advancing public welfare.
“I would like to extend my deep sympathies and condolences to the family of Former House Speaker Prospero Nograles. I am deeply saddened to hear his demise,” he said.
“His legacy as a leader who used his voice to speak on behalf of the Filipino people will continue to inspire other politicians and leaders who are committed to serving their countrymen,” he added.
Duterte also prayed for the family grieving over the loss of Nograles. “It is also my prayer that the Lord Almighty ease your pain and that you will find solace and strength during this difficult time,” he said. (Genalyn Kabiling)
