The Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) said that it will conduct an investigation on the labor law compliance of Chinese businesses reportedly rejecting Filipino customers and only cater to Chinese nationals.
“We will investigate. So, part of our investigation is to check. But our investigation will be looking into their compliance on labor laws,” said Labor Assistant Secretary Benjo Benavidez.
Benavidez said that it is the labor department’s mandate to check if the said Chinese businesses are complying with the Philippine labor laws.
“To us on the employment side — labor and employment. We enforce labor laws and employment laws,” he said.
Benavidez added that it is the role of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to ensure consumer protection.
“If it is consumer protection, ano siya DTI kasi may consumer protection act tayo eh,” he added.
Recently, Malacanang instructed the DoLE and other state agencies to investigate Chinese businesses that reportedly cater exclusively to Chinese nationals.
Senator Panfillo Lacson urged the government to close down such establishments. (Analou de Vera)
